KDE4 Development Platform in Fedora 8 (and Fedora 7)
Through some recent heroic efforts by members of the Fedora KDE SIG (you know who you are!), looks like Fedora will be in a position to ship the KDE4 Development Platform in Fedora 8 (and available for Fedora 7 as an update soon).

What exactly do I mean when I say "KDE4 Development Platform" you ask?   Excellent question.   I mean all of kdelibs, kdepimlibs, kdebase that doesn't conflict with their kde3 counterparts, enough to provide a kde4 runtime to build/run kde4 applications.

Good job KDE SIG. Hope you guys put out a KDE 4 experimental live image of Fedora sometime soon. We need more visibility. Jonathan Roberts has been interviewing developers on the new features in Fedora 8. I guess I will ask him to track you guys down and ask some questions!

Unfortunately, a KDE 4 experimental live image would need a full KDE 4 setup, which we don't have yet. As Rex tried to explain, we only have the base SDK ready, you can build and run KDE 4 applications (while running KDE 3 or any other desktop environment), but you can't try out the KDE 4 desktop with these packages.

As much as I hate pointing users to the competition, if someone wants to try out the KDE 4 workspace (i.e. the actual desktop environment) right now, the openSUSE-based KDE 4 Live is probably their best bet right now.

Judging by kde-redhat's packages, this means we'll be able to start a KDE4 session, or does it? :)

Sorry, but no, you won't. Not only is kdebase-workspace now its own tarball which we aren't currently packaging, but it would also conflict with KDE 3. The previous packages which allowed you to start a full KDE 4 session either conflicted with KDE 3 (not an option for packages going into Fedora as long as KDE 3 will be the default version) or installed into /opt/kde4 (not really an option either).

I see. No big problem though, I've already given openSUSE's latest live CD a try. Anyway, I do hope Fedora will give some love to KDE4, it seems all the polish goes to GNOME (with Fedora as with other distros) which seems odd given the polls that suggest equal userbase.

I do hope Fedora will give some love to KDE4 ...
huh? What are we (KDE SIG), chopped liver? :) Phrased as "some *more* love..." sure, *more* help, polish, etc, would certainly be nice.
